Tips for Using the Internet Responsibly at your Workplace

Though you may want to dispute it, almost every employee uses the workplace internet for personal uses during working hours. Some of these uses include surveying online sales, watching videos on YouTube and visiting social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. However, if you are not careful, you could have problems with your employer. Interestingly, some people use the employer’s internet to search for other jobs; this may put them at loggerheads with the employer.

Therefore, you need to be more careful when using your boss’s internet. Here are a few dos and don’ts. First, never try to visit inappropriate sites such as those related to adult content. Additionally, avoid the illegal download of files such as movies. Though, most people may not know it, using your employer’s internet to look for a new job is very wrong; you may fail to secure one then your boss fires you from the current one, once he/she monitors your internet activities. Moreover, never use social media platforms to post negative remarks concerning your workplace, employee or colleagues. The information may reach these people and you would be in real trouble.

However, there are some things that you can use your employer’s internet for. However, you need to be aware of the policy governing your workplace’s internet usage. Some firms permit their employees to use about 30 – 60 minutes of their free time on the internet. Most importantly, ensure that you are on an unpaid break when your use your boss’s internet for personal purposes. Also, if you are tempted to use the internet during working hours and you are confronted by your supervisor, be honest about it; lying will put you into more trouble.

With the mentioned dos and don’ts, you will be able to exercise more responsibility when using your employer’s internet.
